Market position
One institution. One buyout standard. No competing product line.
Standards-first
The Level 1 CBOK, competency framework, and examination weightings are set in advance and published. Candidates and employers know what is being tested before anyone registers.
Examination-only credential
The CBP is earned by proctored assessment (4-hour virtual data room case), experience, and charter application against the published standard.
Independent assessment
Examination policy and marking protocols are set by the board. Preparation is independent study against published materials. The incentive is integrity of the standard.
Mission
Mission of the board
IBPES exists to define, publish, and defend a single competence standard for buyout practice. The board's work is standards and examination integrity.
The International Board of Private Equity Standards is being established so that buyout competence can be assessed against a published body of knowledge, by proctored examination, under rules set independently of any instruction provider. The board's mission is to make those rules transparent, stable, and enforceable for candidates, employers, and the market.
That mandate requires structural separation. Standards-setting, examination delivery, and organisational oversight are distinct functions. The examination committee does not set syllabus content. The standards committee does not mark scripts. Assessment is governed for integrity of the standard, not commercial enrolment.
For practitioners, the mission translates into one charter pathway: the Chartered Buyout Professional designation, earned through assessment and charter application. For employers, it means a credential backed by published weightings, conduct schedules, and a register the board intends to maintain with discipline.
Why IBPES exists
A standard built for buyout practice, not adapted from it
The International Board of Private Equity Standards (IBPES) is being established as an independent standards body to publish the buyout-specific CBOK and issue the Chartered Buyout Professional® (CBP) through proctored examination.
For decades, private equity operated without a board-governed charter tied to a published buyout syllabus and a proctored transaction case. Generalist finance credentials were not designed to certify buyout judgment on direct deals. IBPES is being established to hold this gap: an independent body whose mandate is the standard and the CBP designation earned against it.

How we differ
| IBPES / CBP | Programme certificate | Generalist finance credential | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Board-governed buyout standard | Programme completion | Broad finance knowledge base |
| Buyout-specific syllabus | Published CBOK | Provider-defined content | Not buyout-specific |
| Assessment | Proctored VDR case examination | Often none or provider-set | Multi-level standardised exams |
| Instruction tied to issuer | No | Often yes | No (prep ecosystem separate) |
| Post-nominal of record | CBP | Varies; rarely chartered | Designation-specific |

Examination and charter administration

Level 1 is a 4-hour proctored virtual data room case with structured workbook, knowledge checks, and written judgment. The standards committee sets syllabus content; the examination committee administers delivery and marking protocols. Pass rates follow pass rates published after the first full charterholder cohort (minimum n=100).
Examination reference: $1,350 per sitting. Windows: June 2027 inaugural window (Level I). Program enrollment: $450 one-time. Annual charterholder dues: $400 / year.
Designation discipline
Selective issuance, not mass certification
The CBP register opens with the first verified charterholder cohort. The board does not publish unaudited membership or designation counts.
Examination cohorts are sized to proctoring and marking capacity. Charter approval follows published experience, conduct, and board review rules. That model favours a credential employers can treat as a standard of record, not a volume certificate.
Practitioners in investment banking, consulting, and private equity use the pathway to signal buyout competence for promotion screens and mandate work. Employers review the published CBOK, sitting format, and designation rules directly.
Public search of the charterholder register begins when the first cohort is designated (Before June 2027 window (dates published Q1 2027) window for examination registration). Until then, no charter has been issued under the current standard.
