Private equity certification
How to evaluate a private equity credential
Private equity credentials fall into three types: university degrees, course completion certificates from training providers, and board-governed charters examined against a published standard. Chartered Buyout Professional® is the latter: proctored buyout case, experience rules, and CBP post-nominal issued by IBPES.
Employers and candidates should ask three questions: who publishes the standard, what assessment proves competence, and whether the issuer profits from training enrolment. IBPES was formed to make those answers transparent for buyout practice.
| Topic | IBPES / CBP | Typical alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Course certificate | Not applicable | Attendance or completion only |
| Board-governed charter | Chartered Buyout Professional® | Varies (CFA, CAIA, etc.) |
| Buyout-specific syllabus | Published CBOK (18 readings) | Often generalist or modular |
| Proctored transaction case | Yes (Level 1) | Varies |
